Study Note

The principle 'as we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith' grounds ethical obligation in temporal opportunity (kairon echontes, 'while we have the kairos/appointed time') — a note of eschatological urgency that Paul also sounds in Romans 13:11–13. The priority of the 'household of faith' (oikeioi tēs pisteōs) establishes a graduated ethics of care: the community of Christ is the primary locus of practical good, while 'all men' (pantas) extends it without limit beyond the community. The agricultural metaphor of sowing and reaping (vv. 7–8) makes the 'good work' of verse 10 a form of sowing whose harvest is eschatological, connecting present ethical obligation to future divine accounting. The verse is important for Christian social ethics' negotiation between the particularity of community commitment and the universality of human dignity.
