Study Note
The image 'instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree' employs ecological transformation as the symbol of covenantal renewal — the cursed landscape of Genesis 3:17-18 reversed by divine redemption. The verse concludes Isaiah 55's great invitation chapter with a creational-scope promise: the divine word that goes forth and accomplishes God's purpose (55:10-11) will transform not only human hearts but the physical environment. Romans 8:19-22's 'groaning creation' awaiting liberation and Revelation 22:3's 'no more curse' draw on this tradition of eschatological creation-reversal. The final purpose clause 'for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off' insists that the transformed creation will be a permanent testimony to God's covenant faithfulness.
