Set within Isaiah's eschatological judgment oracle (Isaiah 65:8–16), this verse presents a vivid reversal tableau contrasting 'my servants' — the faithful remnant — against those who have abandoned covenant loyalty. The fourfold antithesis (eat/hungry, drink/thirsty, rejoice/ashamed, sing/cry) employs deuteronomic blessing-and-curse language (Deuteronomy 28) but redirects its application from the whole nation to two groups within Israel. The oracle reflects the post-exilic community's internal struggle between those who maintained Torah faithfulness and syncretists who sacrificed in gardens (v. 3) or consulted the dead (v. 4). Jesus' parable of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:25) employs comparable reversal language, suggesting this Isaianic pattern remained theologically generative.
