Eglon, king of Moab, oppressed Israel for 18 years until Ehud, a left-handed Benjamite, assassinated him and delivered Israel.

Eglon was the king of Moab who, strengthened by alliances with Ammon and Amalek, subjugated Israel and occupied Jericho for eighteen years after Israel had again done evil in the sight of the LORD (Judges 3:12–30). Israel's deliverance came through Ehud, a left-handed Benjamite who gained a private audience with the obese king under the pretext of delivering a secret message, then drove a cubit-long sword into Eglon's belly. Ehud's killing of Eglon led to the rout of ten thousand Moabites and eighty years of peace for Israel. The account is one of the most vivid narratives in the book of Judges.
