Gershom was the firstborn son of Moses and Zipporah, and his descendant Jonathan served as a priest for the idolatrous Danites.
Gershom was the firstborn son of Moses and his Midianite wife Zipporah, born during Moses' years of exile in Midian before the Exodus (Exodus 2:22). Moses named him Gershom, explaining the name with the Hebrew word for 'a sojourner,' saying 'I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.' He later accompanied his father when Moses returned to Egypt (Exodus 4:20), and his descendants are mentioned among the Levites who served at Dan in the time of the judges (Judges 18:30). Gershom represents Moses' complex identity as both Hebrew and Midianite-connected sojourner.
