Study Note

The martial imagery of verse 6 — 'he shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries' — participates in the royal-warrior mythology of the ancient Near East while applying it to the priestly king of Psalm 110. The psalm as a whole is the most quoted in the New Testament, with verse 1 ('sit thou at my right hand') cited in Matthew 22:44, Acts 2:34, and Hebrews 1:13 to establish Christ's post-resurrection enthronement. Verse 6's judgment imagery is picked up in Revelation 19:11-16 in the vision of the rider on the white horse who 'judges and makes war,' linking the Davidic warrior-king tradition to eschatological christology. The psalm's combination of priestly ('after the order of Melchizedek,' v. 4) and royal functions was central to Hebrews' portrait of Christ's dual office.
