Study Note

'The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his anointed, saying...' — the royal enthronement Psalm 2 begins with a tableau of geopolitical revolt against YHWH's chosen king, framing human political history as a cosmic struggle over divine sovereignty. The 'anointed' (mashiach, Messiah) is the Davidic king in its original Sitz im Leben, but already in Second Temple Judaism the psalm was read messianically, and the New Testament cites it extensively (Acts 4:25–26; Hebrews 1:5; Revelation 2:26–27). The nations' conspiracy is met by divine laughter (verse 4) and the declaration from Zion (verse 6), establishing an ironic reversal: human resistance to divine rule is absurd against the backdrop of YHWH's sovereign decree. The verse has provided the vocabulary for early Christian reflection on the crucifixion as the supreme instance of earthly rulers conspiring against the Messiah.
