A visible manifestation of God in the physical world. The Old Testament records numerous theophanies: the burning bush (Exodus 3:2-6), the pillar of cloud and fire (Exodus 13:21-22), God's appearance on Mount Sinai (Exodus 19:16-20), and the Angel of the Lord who appeared to Hagar (Genesis 16:7-13), Abraham (Genesis 18), Jacob (Genesis 32:24-30), and Joshua (Joshua 5:13-15). Many scholars identify the 'Angel of the Lord' as a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ (Christophany). These encounters reveal that the transcendent God graciously makes himself known in tangible, experiential ways.
