Study Note
'But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.' The four-fold designation of Christ as God's gift — wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, redemption — responds to the Corinthians' boasting in human wisdom by relocating every spiritual resource in Christ alone. The source clause 'of him are ye in Christ Jesus' makes union with Christ the prior ground from which all these benefits flow — a compact statement of the doctrine of union with Christ. The doxological conclusion ('that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord,' verse 31) draws from Jeremiah 9:23-24, connecting Paul's Corinthian instruction to prophetic wisdom tradition.
