Study Note

'And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.' The three perfects — washed, sanctified, justified — applied to a community drawn from vices (6:9-10) celebrate transformation as the normal expectation of the gospel. The trinitarian structure (in the name of the Lord Jesus, by the Spirit of God) mirrors Titus 3:4-6 and Ephesians 1's trinitarian soteriology. The order — washed, sanctified, then justified — has been noted as unusual (Paul typically puts justification before sanctification), perhaps because in this pastoral context the lived transformation precedes the forensic verdict in the congregation's experience.
