'In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.' The word 'redemption' (apolytrōsis) carries the commercial background of purchasing a slave's freedom — but here the price is not currency but blood. Colossians 1:14 parallels this verse almost exactly, and together they establish forgiveness as the content of redemption and blood as its cost. The phrase 'riches of his grace' appears three times in Ephesians (1:7; 2:7; 3:16), suggesting that superabundance, not mere sufficiency, characterizes the divine generosity from which redemption flows.
