Study Note

The messianic promise 'I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it' follows God's own 'shepherd' speech in Ezekiel 34, where Yahweh personally assumes the shepherding role the failed human shepherds (leaders) refused. The 'servant David' is a post-Davidic figure — a new David — anticipated in 2 Samuel 7's eternal dynasty promise and in Jeremiah 23:5-6's 'Branch of David.' The dual structure — 'I the Lord will be their God' (divine direct rule) AND 'my servant David a prince among them' (messianic mediation) — anticipates the New Testament's two-nature christology of God incarnate in the Davidic son who is both fully divine and fully human shepherd. John 10:11 ('I am the good shepherd') explicitly draws on Ezekiel 34's divine shepherd-becoming-human tradition.
