Study Note

God's declaration 'I will magnify myself and sanctify myself and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord' at the conclusion of the Gog oracle assigns a revelatory purpose to the eschatological battle: the nations will know YHWH not through Israel's persuasion but through his direct intervention against the ultimate hostile coalition. The phrase 'I will be known' (v'nodaati) echoes the recognition formula ('and they shall know that I am the Lord') that occurs over seventy times in Ezekiel, making this passage the eschatological fulfillment of that recurring covenantal claim. The Gog-Magog typology of chapters 38–39 reappears in Revelation 20:7–10 as the final battle before the new creation, establishing these chapters as the primary prophetic template for Christian eschatological conflict narratives. The verse is important for understanding apocalyptic literature's claim that history's end is a theophanic revelation event.
