The demonstration of divine love — 'in this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him' — presents the Incarnation as the definitional act that gives the word 'love' its Christian meaning. The phrase 'was made manifest' (phaneroo) is the Fourth Gospel's characteristic word for the revealing of divine reality in visible, historical form — the love was always present but became recognizable in the sending of the Son. 'Only Son' (monogenes) concentrates the costliness of the sending: the unique, irreplaceable Son given so that those who were not sons might receive life. The verse is part of 1 John's definition of love (4:7-12) that systematically grounded the ethic of mutual love in the prior reality of divine love rather than in human affective experience.
