Barren, arid landscapes that serve as places of testing, purification, and divine encounter. Israel wandered forty years in the wilderness (Numbers 14:33). Moses met God at the burning bush in the desert (Exodus 3). Elijah fled to the desert and heard God's still, small voice (1 Kings 19). John the Baptist preached in the wilderness (Matthew 3:1). Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days of temptation (Matthew 4:1-2). Isaiah 35:1 prophesied, 'The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.' Deserts strip away distractions, revealing one's true dependence on God.
