The Teacher's exploration of life's meaning under the sun, concluding that all is 'hevel' — vanity, vapor, or meaninglessness apart from God. Ecclesiastes examines wisdom (1:12-18), pleasure (2:1-11), work (2:18-26), time (3:1-15), wealth (5:10-6:9), and death (9:1-12), finding each ultimately fleeting. Yet the book is not nihilistic — it repeatedly counsels enjoyment of God's gifts (2:24-26, 3:12-13, 5:18-20, 9:7-10) and concludes with the imperative: 'Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind' (12:13). Ecclesiastes provides a brutally honest assessment of life that drives the reader toward dependence on God.
