Jesus' identification of the supreme command in all of Scripture. When asked which is the greatest commandment, Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments' (Matthew 22:37-40). The first command quotes Deuteronomy 6:5 (the Shema), and the second quotes Leviticus 19:18. Together they provide the interpretive key for all of Scripture — every other commandment is an application of loving God wholly and loving others genuinely. Romans 13:10 summarizes: 'Love is the fulfillment of the law.'
