The doctrine that the eternal Son of God took on human flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. John 1:14 declares 'the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,' while Philippians 2:6-8 describes Christ emptying himself and taking the form of a servant. The incarnation is central to Christian theology because it affirms that God entered human history to redeem humanity. Hebrews 2:14-17 explains that Jesus shared in flesh and blood so that through death he might destroy the power of death. The virgin birth narratives in Matthew 1 and Luke 1 describe how this union of divine and human natures came about.
