The storytelling genre that comprises roughly 40 percent of the Old Testament, including the historical books from Genesis through Esther and portions of the prophets. Biblical narrative is not mere chronicle but theologically interpreted history — events selected and arranged to reveal God's character and purposes. Key features include dialogue, characterization, plot development, and irony. Great narratives include the Joseph story (Genesis 37-50), the Exodus (Exodus 1-15), David's rise (1 Samuel 16-2 Samuel 5), and Ruth. Jesus continued the narrative tradition through parables. Reading biblical narrative requires attention to what the author includes, excludes, emphasizes, and how they position the reader relative to the characters.
