The book of Psalms served as Israel's hymnbook and prayer book, covering the full range of human experience directed toward God. The 150 psalms include hymns of praise (Psalm 100, 150), laments (Psalm 13, 22, 88), thanksgiving (Psalm 30, 107), royal psalms (Psalm 2, 110), wisdom psalms (Psalm 1, 37), penitential psalms (Psalm 32, 51), and pilgrimage songs (Psalms 120-134). Jesus quoted psalms more than any other Old Testament book. Paul instructed believers to address 'one another with psalms' (Ephesians 5:19). The psalms teach us to pray honestly, worship boldly, and trust God through every circumstance of life.
