The restoration of God's people to their land, fulfilling prophetic promises. Cyrus the Persian decreed in 538 BC that Jews could return to Jerusalem (Ezra 1:1-4), fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy (Isaiah 44:28-45:1). Three waves returned: under Zerubbabel (Ezra 1-6), Ezra (Ezra 7-10), and Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1-13). The return was bittersweet — those who remembered Solomon's temple wept at the modest replacement (Ezra 3:12). Yet prophets like Haggai and Zechariah encouraged the people. The physical return foreshadowed a greater spiritual return: 'I will bring them back to live in Jerusalem; they will be my people, and I will be faithful and righteous to them as their God' (Zechariah 8:8).
