Study Note

The declaration that 'the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up' initiates Isaiah's great 'lowering of the high' vision (2:12-22), in which cedars of Lebanon, oaks of Bashan, high mountains, lofty towers, and all human pride-expressions are brought down before God's majesty alone being exalted. The repeated phrase 'and he shall be brought low' or 'and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day' (vv. 11, 17) creates a liturgical refrain of divine self-glorification through the humbling of pride. The text becomes the prophetic background for Mary's Magnificat ('he hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree,' Luke 1:52) and James 4:6-10's call to humble oneself before God. Theologically, the 'day of the Lord' tradition makes divine history-ending the corrective of human history-making.
