Study Note

The Trisagion — 'Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory' — sung by the seraphim at Isaiah's temple vision is the most concentrated expression of divine holiness in the Hebrew Bible. The triple repetition of 'holy' (qadosh) in Hebrew marks superlative emphasis and has influenced all subsequent Jewish and Christian liturgies, appearing in the Kedushah of the Amidah and in Revelation 4:8. The declaration that 'the whole earth is full of his glory' (kavod, literally weight or radiance) universalizes what was experienced in the Temple, embedding cosmic theology within cultic encounter. Isaiah's response of woe at his own uncleanness (verse 5) establishes the pattern that proximity to holiness reveals human sinfulness — a principle operative in the commissioning of Moses, Gideon, and Peter (Luke 5:8).
