The Hebrew 'meshuvah' (backsliding, apostasy) is a key concept in Jeremiah, appearing also in 3:6, 8, 11, 12 — the chronic pattern of turning away that characterises Jeremiah's generation. The verse's logic anticipates Paul's 'whatever a man soweth, that shall he also reap' (Galatians 6:7) — moral law is built into the structure of existence such that sin carries its own corrective within it.
