Study Note

Study Note

'But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you' — the Paraclete's teaching and remembering functions are foundational for the theology of apostolic tradition and the inspiration of the Gospels themselves. Patristic writers understood this verse to guarantee that the apostolic community's recollection of Jesus was Spirit-superintended rather than merely humanly preserved. The 'all things' taught by the Spirit is not unlimited new revelation but the full interpretive unfolding of what Jesus already said and did, establishing continuity between the historical Jesus and the apostolic witness.
