Study Note

Jesus's quotation 'it is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God' (drawing on Isaiah 54:13) — followed by 'every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me' — integrates the new-covenant promise of direct divine instruction with christological coming-to-Jesus as its fulfillment. The Isaiah 54:13 background is the post-exile restoration promise that all of God's children will be 'taught of Yahweh,' part of the cosmic rebuilding of Zion after exile — here applied to the eschatological gathering enabled by Jesus's coming. The verse articulates the Johannine epistemology of faith: coming to Jesus is itself the result of divine pedagogy, not independent human initiative, grounding election and faith in the prior teaching activity of the Father. This passage is a cornerstone of Reformed doctrines of irresistible grace.
