Jesus's declaration that 'All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him' stands at the theological apex of Matthew's Gospel and is sometimes called 'the Johannine thunderbolt' for its resemblance to John 1-3 and 10. The mutual exclusivity of the Father-Son knowledge implies an ontological intimacy that sets the Son apart from all other human knowledge of God, including that of the greatest prophets. The verse grounds Christian mission: Jesus is the only mediator of the Father's knowledge, making proclamation necessary. Its placement after the rebuke of Galilean cities and the invitation to the weary (verses 20-30) gives it a pastoral as well as doctrinal function.
