Study Note

Moses's charge to the nation on the eve of his death repeats the command 'be strong and courageous' that frames Deuteronomy and the beginning of Joshua. The basis for courage is explicitly theological: 'the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.' The verse is part of a farewell address that anticipates Israel's crossing into Canaan without Moses, addressing the corporate anxiety of a leaderless transition. In the New Testament, Hebrews 13:5 quotes a closely related formulation as grounds for contentment and freedom from the love of money.
