An emotion addressed over 300 times in Scripture, with both positive and negative dimensions. 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom' (Proverbs 9:10) — this reverent awe before God is commended. But anxious, paralyzing fear is repeatedly countered: 'Fear not' appears throughout Scripture. Isaiah 41:10 reassures, 'Do not fear, for I am with you.' Joshua 1:9 commands, 'Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.' Second Timothy 1:7 declares, 'God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.' Perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18).
