God reveals his character through his names in Scripture. YHWH (the LORD) is the covenant name revealed to Moses at the burning bush — 'I AM WHO I AM' (Exodus 3:14). El Shaddai (God Almighty, Genesis 17:1) emphasizes power. El Elyon (God Most High, Genesis 14:18) expresses sovereignty. Adonai (Lord, Master) conveys authority. Jehovah Jireh (The LORD Will Provide, Genesis 22:14), Jehovah Rapha (The LORD Who Heals, Exodus 15:26), Jehovah Shalom (The LORD Is Peace, Judges 6:24) reveal specific aspects of God's care. The third commandment forbids misusing God's name (Exodus 20:7). Jesus taught us to pray, 'Hallowed be your name' (Matthew 6:9). God's name represents his very presence and character.
