The artistic literary form found throughout the Old Testament, characterized by parallelism, imagery, and emotional intensity rather than rhyme and meter. Approximately one-third of the Hebrew Bible is poetry, primarily in Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Songs, Lamentations, and large portions of the prophets. Poetry uses concrete, sensory language to express abstract spiritual truths. The prophets delivered much of their message in poetic form, lending power and memorability. Jesus' teaching contains poetic structures in Aramaic.
