The devotional reading and study of the Torah (the five books of Moses), considered the highest form of worship in Jewish tradition. Psalm 1:2 blesses the one whose 'delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.' Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, is an extended meditation on the beauty and power of God's law. Joshua 1:8 commands, 'Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.' Ezra was 'well versed in the Law of Moses' (Ezra 7:6) and devoted himself to its study, practice, and teaching (7:10). Jesus' knowledge of Torah was evident from age twelve (Luke 2:46-47).
