Study Note

The Great Commission — 'go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit' — is the culminating command of Matthew's Gospel, set on a mountain in Galilee. The command structure in Greek has one main verb ('make disciples') with three participles: going, baptizing, and teaching — meaning disciple-making is the central mandate. 'All nations' (panta ta ethne) signals the universal scope of the mission, breaking the primarily Jewish orientation of Jesus's earthly ministry. The Trinitarian baptismal formula here is among the earliest such formulations in the New Testament and has shaped Christian liturgy and doctrine of the Trinity.
