Study Note

The Thessalonians are described as those who 'wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come' — a three-part christological summary (heavenly expectation, resurrection, wrath-deliverance) packed into a single participial clause. The description of the community as 'waiters' (anamenein) presents eschatological anticipation as a defining communal posture — the church is constituted partly by what it is waiting for. The 'wrath to come' (orgēs tēs erchomenēs) is eschatological wrath rather than merely historical consequence, and 'deliverance from' (ryomenon ek) implies removal from the sphere of judgment rather than merely protection within it. Romans 5:9 ('saved from wrath through him') and 1 Thessalonians 5:9 ('God hath not appointed us to wrath') develop this protective-deliverance theology further.
