'Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.' Written from Paul's final imprisonment, this verse testifies to divine faithfulness at the moment of greatest human abandonment — 'all men forsook me' (verse 16). The 'mouth of the lion' is likely a reference to imminent execution (cf. Psalm 22:21; Daniel 6), but could also refer to a specific judicial situation. The verse exemplifies what Paul models in Acts 20:24 — 'none of these things move me' — showing that 2 Timothy's pastoral instructions about endurance flow from lived experience of divine faithfulness under pressure.
