Study Note
'Fear not, thou worm Jacob' is one of the Bible's most startling divine addresses — God acknowledges Israel's smallness and apparent weakness before promising active help. The 'worm' metaphor (Hebrew tola'at) conveys utter vulnerability, making the divine commitment all the more remarkable: the Holy One of Israel is called 'your Redeemer' (go'el), the kinsman-protector who acts on behalf of the helpless. The verse is part of a series of 'fear not' oracles in Second Isaiah (41:10, 13, 14) that form a theological pattern: divine power is most fully displayed through empowering the weak, a logic Paul reflects in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10.
