'And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.' The phrase 'times of the Gentiles' (kairoi ethnōn) is unique to this verse in the Gospels and has generated substantial eschatological debate: does it refer to the Roman period, to a defined era before the Parousia, or to the period of Jewish-Gentile reversal Paul describes in Romans 11:25? The fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE fulfilled the first clause; the 'times of the Gentiles' becoming the eschatological marker for subsequent history has shaped both dispensationalist and amillennialist readings of the end-times.
