Study Note

'But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace' — Paul's logical axiom about the mutual exclusivity of grace and works in the basis of divine favor is among the most condensed formulations in the epistle. The context is the remnant of Israel chosen 'by grace' (11:5), which Paul uses to illustrate that the same logic operative in Abraham's case governs the entire history of election. The axiom reflects the Pauline theology of gift: a gift that is earned ceases to be a gift, just as grace conditioned on merit ceases to be grace — the categories are logically incompatible at the level of basis. This verse has been definitive in Reformation soteriology's insistence on the unconditioned nature of divine favor, distinguishing the Pauline gospel from both moralistic religion and synergistic construals of salvation.
