'Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.' Paul's assertion that the law 'entered' (pareisēlthen — came in alongside) so that sin might abound is one of his most provocative theological claims about Torah's function. Rather than providing a remedy for sin, the law increases consciousness of transgression — a point Paul develops in Romans 7:7-13. The response clause — 'where sin abounded, grace did much more abound' — announces grace as constitutively excessive, always outracing sin's magnitude. Luther's simul iustus et peccator ('simultaneously righteous and sinner') theology draws on exactly this dynamic.
