Divorce
The dissolution of marriage, addressed with gravity in Scripture. Malachi 2:16 expresses God's attitude: 'I hate divorce.' Jesus traced divorce's allowance to 'hardness of heart' (Matthew 19:8) and taught that 'what God has joined together, let no one separate' (Matthew 19:6). He permitted divorce only in cases of sexual immorality (Matthew 19:9). Paul addressed additional situations where an unbelieving spouse departs (1 Corinthians 7:15). While divorce falls short of God's ideal, Scripture also shows God's compassion for those in broken marriages. God himself used divorce language when describing his relationship with unfaithful Israel (Jeremiah 3:8).
