Study Note

The covenant promise to Abram — 'in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed' — extends the particular to the universal: one man's election serves the blessing of all humanity. The Hebrew verb is debated: 'shall be blessed' (niphal, passive — 'will find blessing in you') or 'will bless themselves' (hithpael, reflexive — 'will invoke your name in blessings'), with the passive reading dominant in the Septuagint and in Paul's citation in Galatians 3:8. Paul reads the verse as the 'gospel beforehand' (Galatians 3:8), finding in the Abrahamic promise the scriptural anticipation of Gentile inclusion through Christ. The verse is the hermeneutical hinge on which the universal scope of the biblical narrative turns — from the scattered peoples of Genesis 10-11 to the assembled nations gathered under Abrahamic blessing.
