Study Note
The covenant renewal at Bethel — 'thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all families of the earth be blessed' — extends to Jacob the Abrahamic covenant (Genesis 12:3; 22:18) with the universal blessing clause intact. The four-directional spread (west, east, north, south) implies a centrifugal mission from Bethel — a geographical comprehensiveness that anticipates the Great Commission's extension to 'all nations.' Paul reads 'thy seed' as messianic singular in Galatians 3:16 ('he saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ'), making the blessing-promise of Bethel ultimately fulfilled in Christ's work. The ladder-vision's connection of heaven and earth (28:12) is given Christological interpretation in John 1:51 ('hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man').
