Study Note
The Emmaus road encounter in which Jesus 'expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself' is the New Testament's most explicit statement that the Hebrew Bible is christologically coherent. The phrase 'beginning at Moses and all the prophets' establishes a hermeneutical principle: the entire scriptural canon finds its interpretive centre in Christ's suffering and glory (verse 26). This became the founding warrant for Christian typological and allegorical reading of the Old Testament from the apostolic period onward. John 5:39-46 (Moses wrote of me) and 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (Christ died and rose 'according to the scriptures') independently confirm that the early church read the resurrection as the hermeneutical key to Israel's entire textual heritage.
