Study Note

Paul describes Jesus as 'declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead' — a formulation that has been read as both adoptionist (the resurrection constitutes sonship) and confirmatory (the resurrection reveals a pre-existing sonship publicly). The majority scholarly reading is confirmatory: 'declared' (horizein) means 'appointed, installed, publicly demonstrated' — the resurrection is God's endorsement of the one who was already Son according to the Davidic promise of verse 3. Acts 2:36 ('God hath made that same Jesus... both Lord and Christ') and Acts 13:33's resurrection-citation of Psalm 2:7 ('thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee') show that Luke's theology, like Paul's, locates a decisive royal enthronement in the resurrection without denying eternal sonship. The verse is foundational for the NT theology of resurrection as the public vindication and enthronement of the pre-existent Son.
