Study Note

'And he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised' — the verse states the soteriological and ethical consequence of Christ's representative death in a single chiastic formulation: death for all → new orientation of those who live. The 'for all' (hyper pantōn) in verse 14–15 is one of Paul's universal atonement declarations, raising the classic Calvinist-Arminian question about the scope of Christ's death — whether intended for all humanity or for all the elect. The ethical consequence — 'no longer live for themselves' — makes the death and resurrection of Christ not merely a salvation transaction but a re-orientation of the self from autonomy to Christo-centric devotion. The verse belongs to the dense theological unit of 2 Corinthians 5:14–21, which includes the new creation, ambassadorial ministry, and reconciliation themes — one of the most concentrated Pauline christological arguments.
