Miriam's victory song — 'sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea' — is widely regarded by scholars as one of the oldest preserved fragments of Hebrew poetry, possibly predating the extended Song of Moses in Exodus 15:1-18. The terse, drum-beat rhythm of the couplet suits antiphonal performance: Miriam leading the women with timbrels in a call-and-response celebration that gave communal, participatory voice to the liberation experience. The verb 'ga'oh ga'ah' (gloriously triumphed, literally 'he rose up, rose up') uses intensification by repetition to convey the totality of divine victory. The song provides a paradigm for women's prophetic leadership in worship and was cited by early Christian writers as a prefiguration of the church's resurrection song.
