Study Note

'Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.' Part of the Thirteen Attributes of God (Exodus 34:6-7) — the self-disclosure Moses requested after the golden calf — this verse holds in tension lavish forgiveness ('thousands') with unflinching justice ('by no means clear the guilty'). The asymmetry is deliberate: mercy extends to thousands, judgment to three or four generations. Numbers 14:18 and Nehemiah 9:17 cite these attributes in intercession, and they became the foundational Jewish affirmation of divine character read during the Days of Awe.
