Wisdom's rhetorical question — 'how long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?' — is the opening of her public appeal, cast as a street sermon addressing three types of the foolish. The simple (pethi) are naive and impressionable; the scoffers (letsim) are contemptuous and resistant; the fools (kesilim) are stubborn in their anti-intellectual orientation. The question 'how long?' introduces urgency: the invitation is time-limited, and continued rejection of Wisdom will eventually result in disaster from which she will not rescue. The passage (1:20-33) presents Wisdom as a prophet figure, using prophetic speech forms to create a personification that the rest of Proverbs will develop into theological depth in chapters 8-9.
