The application to the Son of Psalm 45:6 — 'Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom' — constitutes one of the most direct New Testament ascriptions of the divine title to Jesus. Psalm 45 was originally composed as a royal wedding hymn addressing an Israelite king with divine-like honor, and Hebrews' application of it to Jesus reads the ancient royal text as prophetically anticipating a uniquely divine ruler. The catena of Old Testament quotations in Hebrews 1:5–14 is the most concentrated Christology-from-Scripture passage in the New Testament, deploying seven texts to establish Jesus' superiority to angels and his unique divine sonship. The verse is foundational for trinitarian theology's scriptural argument that the divine title belongs to the Son as well as the Father, and was extensively deployed in the Arian controversies of the fourth century.
