Study Note

'For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica' — the spare biographical note about Demas (mentioned earlier in Colossians 4:14 and Philemon 24 among Paul's fellow workers) becomes in the NT's final Paul-letter a cautionary paradigm of apostolic defection. The Greek aion houtos ('this present age/world') is a Pauline eschatological term contrasting the current evil age with the age to come — Demas has chosen the wrong temporal horizon. The verse has been widely applied in Christian discipleship contexts as a warning against the erosion of commitment through comfort-seeking and the gradual recalibration of ultimate loyalty from Christ to the surrounding culture's values and rewards.
